Hi, I'm Carl Emerson, founder of Emerson Math Tutoring. I am a senior at North Carolina State University studying Statistics and Mathematics. I discovered my passion for tutoring while helping my peers excel in their math courses throughout college, and through my first formal tutoring experience with the Department of Statistics at NC State. I enjoy guiding students to grasp the essence of statistics and mathematics, seeing tangible improvements in their study habits and courses, and seeing the "lightbulb" above their heads when they finally understand a challenging concept. My wheelhouse of expertise is primarily in statistics, but I have a strong background in mathematics and I am comfortable tutoring a wide range of math subjects from basic algebra to multivariable calculus. Outside of my academic and professional life, I enjoy playing the piano, bass guitar, weightlifting, and running!
My favorite tutoring approach is to ensure a student understands the big picture first, before diving into the specifics of formulas and procedures, where I continuously remind them of what we are trying to accomplish with each problem. I believe that understanding the "why" behind mathematical concepts is imperative for long-term retention, and I hope that by installing this mindset in my students, that they may even come to appreciate math as I do! Of course, I have learned that every student is unique, and this isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. I adapt my teaching style to each student's needs; mapping out concepts is helpful for the visual learner, thorough examples work well for the tactile learner, and engaging discussions work well for the auditory learner. I do not expect perfection from my students, but I do expect effort and a willingness to learn. Finally, I am not a miracle worker! While I will do everything in my power to help you succeed, ultimately, your success depends on your commitment and dedication to improving your math skills.
